What did Enview find?

During an engagement with a large electric and gas utility, Enview automatically identified newly-constructed homes near a large-diameter gas transmission pipeline. Enview’s 3D Geospatial Analytics AI Engine worked at a massive scale processing hundreds of thousands of structures to detect the relevant changes. 

Why is this important?

Pipeline operators monitor human occupancy near gas transmission and liquid pipelines for safety reasons. The addition of new structures can have an impact on the Class Location and High Consequence Area (HCA) calculations for these pipelines. Such changes might have to be reported to regulators and lead to changes in pipeline operations. Accurate and timely identification of structures helps operators with regulatory compliance and enhances safety.

What actions were taken?

Given these findings, the operator will be able to prepare well in advance of a Class Location or HCA change and reflect it in their GIS system. Typically, ground and aerial patrols will also be alerted to the new work. In addition, accurately measuring both the area and volume of displaced earth near the pipeline will help the operator closely monitor the construction activities over time.
